Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,
It is no secret that Canibus is one of my all time favorite lyricists/emcees! A brief story of how I came across Canibus and his music was back in 2008-09′. It was back in the Lime Wire days. I was in college, so I started getting into lyrical rap. Yes, I know I was late to the party, but better late than never!
I was downloading music one day and somehow I came across two of his songs: “Buckingham Palace” and “Channel Zero”, I was hypnotized. Up until that moment I hadn’t heard complex rhymes that involved scientific terms. His voice and his flow were also unique something I hadn’t quite heard before. He had this aggressive/raspy tone, which I dug reminiscent of DMX. Canibus has a style and lyrics that were definitely ahead of their time. I was captivated by his battle rap flow. Also he has this poetic side to him that I love. His use of metaphors and lyricism to paint a picture have always amazed me!
As a lyricist I can say listening to his music expanded my language and influenced my lyrics to be more poetic and intricate. He inspired me to take my craft and writing more seriously and work on my wordplay. When I look back to my old lyrics and compare them to now I can see the impact he has had on me.
I’m glad I came across his music it was one of the best things that could have happened! That day I became a die hard Canibus fan and ended up downloading his full discography. From that point on I kept up with the albums he dropped and supported his music!
I will be reviewing Full Spectrum Dominance 3, which is Canibus’ 16th studio solo album. Canibus is an accomplished rap veteran! This album is a testament to that. Canibus followed the short album formula this time around. This project only has 7 tracks, with a length time of 19 min, just a few minutes shy of 20 minutes. The brevity of the project works in its favor.
All the songs have a common theme about government control, questioning ourselves to see if exterior forces control our decisions, self love and Canibus showing off why he is a lyrical beast!
For those who are Canibus fans like myself. Please check out Thatshiphopmusic.com and purchase his album there! I always encourage people to support their favorite artists so they can keep dropping dope music!
