Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,
In honor of Throwback Thursday today I will be reviewing Sav Killz’s album, “Bangers and B-Sides 2”! Sav Killz aka Jamel Hampton is an emcee that hails from New York, Brooklyn (Bedstuy) to be exact. He was born and raised in Flatbush! He started off as a graffiti writer and started rapping at an early age. His monicker used to be Savage Killa then he shortened it to Sav Killz. He released his first project “Determination Through Time” in 2006. He is well known in the New York Underground Hip Hop scene. He was part of the Wu-Tang Clan cypher and connected to Popa Wu.
I just got introduced to his music recently. He was actually humble enough to message me on social media and share his music. He found me through UGHH and saw that I had a real love for Hip Hop. I gave his music a listen and viewed an interview on YouTube. He was interviewed by Peter Rosenberg from Hot 97 back in 2015! Glad he reached out if not I would still be sleeping on his dope music!
The album version of his mixtape I will be reviewing today consists of 13 tracks. The first track “Super Superb” has a soulful boom bap melody. In this track he is making it known he is a lyrical emcee who is better than the other rappers who are just repetitive and have no substance. He spits that he is making music that is timeless and that people can quote! Definitely a great way to start the album.
There are various themes he touches on throughout the project from the drug game, being a dope emcee to being fearless and following your dreams. For instance in the track called “Falling Victim” he is telling a story about a hustla in the drug game who was making money and became addicted to his own product. It is an anti drug anthem! Sav ends the song with saying he has seen people who have become addicted to controlled substances and tells us to stay away from the drug life.
Another standout track is “Fearless”, he starts of telling a story about a dude who was an epic rhymer and invested in honing his craft, but who also had the fear of fading into obscurity. In the second verse Sav talks about his dedication to his craft. Also that it upsets him that some of his peers are making wack music that affects his favorite genre “Hip Hop”. He spits that he has nothing to lose, but something to prove! The overall message is to just be fearless, make music you love, respect real lyricism and make music that has meaning!
Sav’s rhymes flow effortlessly like he was born to do this! I enjoyed the lyricism, word play and storytelling. Also the features were dope it wasn’t overdone, he still shined on his own project! If you do not know who he is do yourself a favor and check out his music! Show support by streaming or purchasing his music! Anything to support a true lyricist like him! You can feel and see he has a true love for rap and the Hip Hop culture!
Thank you for reading my review. Hope you all enjoyed it! Until next time horror fiends and hip hop heads! While you’re at it follow my blog on social media @7octoberz and Facebook!
