Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,
Today I will be reviewing Choosey and Exile’s album, “Black Beans”. Choosey is a rapper who hails from San Diego. I had heard of him previously, but hadn’t delved too much into his catalogue. I kept hearing he was dropping a new project with Exile on the production and knew I had to check it out! For those who are not familiar, Exile is a hip hop producer, DJ and occasionally a rapper. His beat production is mellow and just a soulful vibe! He produced, “Below the Heavens” which was a project with the rapper Blu that is a phenomenal rap album!
Now to begin this review, Black Beans is an unapologetic album about being brown, black and proud! In Choosey’s case he is a product of both. If I had to compare the sound of this album I would say it is a mix of Chicano Rap and Rap. This album is filled with beautiful oldie samples, lyricism about cultural roots, family, love, knowledge, spoken word, poetry and just chill vibes! Exile brought his A game to the production and dope samples! The first single for this album, “Low Low” is a summer anthem! It perfectly captures a summer day in beautiful San Diego and Aloe Blacc’s vocals compliment the track perfectly!
There are also witty bars in each track that describe Mexican culture from the food to poetry about our roots! I really loved the poetry/spoken word in Black Beans and Ain’t Scared. I would describe this album as a soundtrack to those of us who are either black, brown or both and are proud of our heritage and skin! This album is very uplifting and inspiring!
I copped my copy of this project the day it dropped and it was worth every single penny! I highly recommend checking out this album it is a beautiful piece of art! The transition between songs were seem-less, each song blended together in the perfect order. This is an album where our culture is represented in a positive way and perfectly encapsulates both brown and black lifestyles or at least offers a glimpse. Choosey created a timeless project that encourages self love and to be proud of where we come from!
