Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,
Today I will be reviewing the EP titled, “Escapism” by Kiddo from EOTR. Kiddo is an LA (Whittier, CA) emcee who is a talented lyricist and has bars!!! She is part of the East of The River collective that consists of dope emcees, producers and a singer! I had heard of Kiddo through YouTube recommendations a few years back, when the LA Hip Hop scene was pouring with a lot of young talent and still is! I thought she was dope, but failed to keep up with her music. I also remember seeing her on a cypher effect video and thought she was dope.
Flash forward to when I started attending HipHopWeds in San Diego this year. I went to one of the events and one of the emcees from her crew EOTR Mad Macks who also happens to be her boyfriend performed that night. I saw her working the merch table and realized I recognized her. I went up to her and introduced myself. I told her I had a Hip Hop and Horror blog and thought she was dope and if any future projects were in the works to let me know. She was very humble and mentioned she had an old project and sent me the Spotify link.
The EP titled, “Escapism” dropped in 2017 with just 7 tracks of pure raw lyricism, storytelling and amazing production. I believe the length is perfect, gives you time to vibe to the project a few times. Kiddo is a very introspective and a poetic lyricist. She raps over boom bap beats. Also you get jazzy vibes and loved the DJ scratches! The sound/production of the overall album gives you an old school vibe which I love!
The first track called, “Making a Feeling” she raps for those chasing their fates and trying to reach their dreams! It is sort of an anthem to be proud you are following your path! Then the track titled, “Buy In” she goes in and talks about the struggles she has to face as a female in the Hip Hop scene and just the world! Def an anthem for the ladies to vibe too. Very relatable track, as a woman we gotta fight twice to earn respect both from men and women! Also the haters and the people you thought had your back change on you. The beat is dope as fuck as well! Hands down my favorite track on this project.
I also loved the acapella Kiddo does at the end of “Chocolates Interlude” she raps about when she first started rapping and trying to find her purpose, very powerful verse! Another dope track is, “Escape” which is a storytelling track. She raps escapism runs in everyone’s blood and it does not discriminate! She tells stories from three different peoples perspectives (including herself). Very deep song! Def recommend checking out this project!
