Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,
Today I will be reviewing the movie, “1BR”. I kept hearing it is a great horror movie and saw it had 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, which Horror movies rarely have that high of a score. I decided to give it a shot, read the synopsis, but didn’t watch the trailer. The main premise is about a girl named Sarah who has just moved to LA. She is running away from her dad who cheated on her dying mother. She ends up finding this apartment complex that has an open 1BR apartment. She applies and from the beginning you get this eerie feeling from the tenants that live there. It’s like a Get Out/Stepford wives type of vibe. Everything seems too friendly and too good to be true. Needless to say Sarah gets the apartment and lies about not having a pet (cat).
The first few days there everyone is welcoming and extremely nice. Everything takes a dark turn when someone slips a note under her door and blackmails her about lying (having a pet). The apartment manager (more like leader) drags her into her apartment now turned into more like a prison cell. They torture her and attempt to brainwash her into believing in these cultish rules about “community”. Fast forward a bit she ends up being part of the “community”, but in the end she realizes this isn’t the life she wants. In an attempt to save a new “recruit” she escapes and runs out of the complex only to find out the whole neighborhood is controlled under this cult. If you watched the movie “The Invitation”, it reminded me of that movie. They could even be in the same universe, just a thought. Overall it was a good film. I had to sit with it a few days to see if I actually liked it. I give it credit for its originality. Go watch it, either you will hate it or love it!
