Hello Hip Hop Heads and Horror Fans,

Today I will be reviewing the movie, “Antebellum” starring singer Janelle Monáe. This film has been one that I have anticipating all year! Since I saw the trailer I was intrigued and excited to see what it would contribute to the horror genre. The premise of this film is Janelle’s character Veronica who is a successful author, activist and professor wakes up in the era where slavery still exists and is a slave herself. She is tortured and trying to figure out how to escape!

This film comes in a timely manner as we are still dealing with racial turmoil with the fact that cops are still murdering black women and men and no justice is being served! This film reminded me a bit of Westworld without the robots! About 40 minutes into the film we realize this is taking place in the present not the past!

The film takes you on an emotional rollercoaster! The first act we see Veronica being tortured to assimilate to her new “home” and is even branded by this “confederate officer”. That scene had me yelling at the screen! You also see a black women being shot while trying to escape. All this is done on purpose so when the second and third act comes all you want is for Veronica to have her revenge! The second act takes you back to who Veronica really is and what she did before she got to that slavery plantation. It turns out she is an activist and professor with a PhD who speaks against racial oppression and black women empowerment. Which makes you question how come she didn’t escape sooner in the film. Puts into perspective when put in a situation are you all talk or will you take action! Also all the other black people that were kidnapped and placed there did not rebel and escape which was one of the flaws to me, but again it also shows the power of fear!

I won’t give up the final ending. I just wish the ending hadn’t been so abrupt. They could of showed what happened after in more detail. Overall I loved the cinematography, the foreshadowing, clues and the cast was amazing! This film will definitely make you angry, sad and victorious. I believe the theme of this film is that some people would enjoy going back to live in the Civil War era as morbid as that sounds. We all know racism is alive and well in America, sadly our whole country was built on it. This film also shows literally how we can break away from those chains to build a better world! I enjoyed this film, had a few flaws, but this definitely is a new gem in the horror genre! We get another black women final girl! Go check it out it is worth the watch!

Thank you for reading my movie review. Hope you all enjoyed it! Until next time horror fiends and hip hop heads!
